"We say God and the imagination are one... How high that highest candle lights the dark . Out of this same light, out of the central mind, We make a dwelling in the evening air, In which being there together is enough."
Sometimes I light candles without understanding at the moment exactly why or for whom I am doing so. Many times I will get a call or message from a friend or loved one asking me to light a candle for them. Other times , candles are lit for myself, my children and my husband, to send extra well intentioned protective light our way.
Last night a friend reached out, worried for another friend. There's a lot going on these days as we all are starting with our 'new beginnings' that has us so wobbly on these new legs that are 2017.
So many people are finally out of abusive relationships, repairing themselves, facing their own demons, traps, mysteries and building themselves back up. So many are just about to leave those things not serving them behind. Others resolving the monsters within themselves and in turn, are able to now set boundaries because of the monsters they have been introduced to in others.
'You light candles? That doesn't really do anything does it?'
Well, let's be honest about life and what we actually know for sure. Not that much. I believe in the power of intentions and manifestations. I believe in the power of mantras and prayer. I believe in the personal magic of each and every one of us and I believe the ones who share with me, their stories of what transpires after candles are lit. feelings of warmth and hope, protection and love .
I have read cards from a distance, over skype or the phone and have smudged the room, the cards and the device I am communicating with, without telling the person what I am doing and they have told me that they suddenly smell burning sage. Coincidence? Doubtful.
Do I have proof of these events? No, but I have witnesses and first hand accounts that have been shared. I also don't look for ways of confirming energies, magic or intended energies to people hell-bent of being non-believers. I don't need to convince anyone. You have to experience things to know they exist, you don't have to believe in things, you have to experience them for yourself.
I had one woman ask for readings , distance smudging and candles to be lit so often, that I wonder now what it is she does to compensate for this energy I no longer prepare for her. I do hope she has found her own way and can light her own candles these days. We all have this power within us. You need to ignite it for yourself.
That being said, it is a good feeling to know that you are supported by someone, no matter how near of far they are. A simple lighting of a candle is a great comfort when offered with proper intention.
“If I burn the candles, it means not only giving you light. It means to show you the fire which I have inside.”
I lit a candle for you.
I'm not sure if you'll know.
I lit a flame for you,
So the light, it could grow.
I sat and sang for you
In hopes that you'd hear
A distance sweet melody
To calm you and clear.
I lit a blaze for you
In the silence and dark
In the cold and the shadows
Where pain leaves its mark.
And the light from the wick
It shone into the night
When all seemed so lost
It held onto truth in its might.
When peril and strife blind
And the way not quite clear
A tiny white flame
In your mind's eye should appear.
And this is the candle
It's the one that I've lit
Is my simple, small prayer
In this space that I sit
And this light of my plea
That burns bright on its way
Knows nothing of obstacles
Or traps, come what may
This light will always find you
If the fogs refuse to rise
Let lonesome soul's rejoice
At this making of the wise.
For moments in these depths
These nightmarish, loathsome tours
They hollow out your bones
They sturdy up your floors.
I lit a candle, a flame,
So your spirit would know
That this darkness won't last
This brightness will grow.
So when darkness consumes you
Look into the depths of your pits
You've got your own wick soaking
In the wealth of where you sit.
But still, if you're lost
And you can't find your way.
I've lit a candle for you
And in my prayers you will stay.
