It's Winter and looking at this space I realized that I was stumped. What to do for the foraging section in the Winter? To be honest I have collected all of what my family will need for This Winter and into the Spring.
It's exciting to think forward to the Spring and new growth coming to us and I'll have lots of foraging blogs coming up but that doesn't help us at the moment now does it?
What am I to do?
Between now and March we like to go out for as many walks as we can on the sunny days. I'm really not a lover of Winter for what is outside all that much. Yes it's beautiful and needed, I just like it for the hibernation part. I don't stop from the the time the sap runs, until after final harvest and canning. Then we celebrate the whole month of December with family and friends. So from January to March, I'm in the house, sipping hot teas, cocoa and coffee, sometimes in a onesie, sometimes in plaid, sometimes under many blankets. Books, writing, baking, crafting and sleeping. es these three months, these are my favorite things.
The one thing we do during this time that has grown to be an important tradition to our family is giving back to the wild life in our area. The pickings for them are slim around these times. So on the sunny days when we can take advantage of soaking in some Vitamin D, we bring snack for the animals in the woods where we like to hike.
'What kind of treats', you ask?
The kids and I made some peanut butter bird seed mini bagels for the animals. We also brought suet cakes. This is just a fraction of what can be done but keep it simple.
From venturing back along the paths we tread days later, we know the wildlife appreciate our gifts.
Do you have any suggestions?
Although I don't have any foraging ideas where I live, that doesn't mean I can't take this time to give back to that which gives me so freely.
Besides, I know there have to be some crafty people out there shaking there head's at me for not knowing about something I can forage right now. In fact, I'm counting on it!
Please tell me what I can forage this time of year! I love to learn and I'm not the only one! Send us your Winter Foraging ideas!
I'm good, I'm just working on getting better ;)
I'm located in the Niagara Region of Southern Ontario, Canada.
