About 7 years ago, I began to dabble in the world of essential oils. I had no idea then what I was in for. So many brands, so many kinds, so much confusion, misdirection and misunderstanding of what the best oils were and why. Never mind what you're supposed to be able to do with them. Inside, outside, topical, internal, external? Oy vey! What's a cuddly insurgent to do?
About 2 years ago, my friend Marlene, told me about doTERRA oils and how much she loved them and that they were really changing her life. I wasn't in a place to get into another essential oil company. I had a full stock of oils I thought I trusted and no money to invest in anything more. Oils are pricey, and for good reason. The amount you're using at a time, it's goes a very long way.
Time went on and I paid more and more attention to this new oil company. There was some fantastic testimonial coming from customers that I really hadn't realized were possible. Such as ingesting the oils. That, to me was a new one.
Or was it? Had I not been ingesting oregano oil for a few years at that point. Hmmmm.....
I have always had a deep love for the smell of frankincense and before I ever had the oil, I was burning the resins on coals as an incense. I still do in a blend I've made up for meditating or just before bed. Frankincense oil is divine, it does something to me, opens me up, lightens me, brings me clarity. I've always seen the benefits of essential oils as an aromatherapy tool. That's why I used them. Now I was being shown I could ingest them! That, to me, was unbelievable. So I had to look into it, to understand. There's a difference in oils for many reasons, but I find that this section explains it quite well: doTERRA Explains EO's
It took Marlene almost 2 years to convince me from beginning to end, or to show me the proof I needed to have me take the leap of faith and try these oils out. Only because I was being discerning, honestly, I don't trust very easily with these companies, and this company was offering all of my questions answered, except for physically...I needed to try them so I ordered a Family Physician Kit:
dōTERRA’s Family Physician Kit is a collection of ten nurturing essential oils, including six single oils and four oil blends. It includes tips for using the oils, as well as an audio CD featuring dōTERRA’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. David K. Hill.
In the audio presentation, Dr. Hill teaches listeners how to care for their family’s everyday health needs with simple and safe methods using the ten nurturing essential oils.
The kit includes 5 ml bottles of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano, Frankincense, Deep Blue, Breathe, Digestzen, and On Guard.
Alright, so that kit gave me something to work with. I actually had a few different 'trusted' brands of all of these oils on hand, I still do, so I can share the comparison with others now. Yes even the contents of the doTERRA blends, I could attempt to reproduce.
I didn't really have to go that far, though I won't discourage others from doing so. All I had to do was smell that frankincense and I was sold. Or so I thought. Not too long after I had a bit of an upset stomach from something I ate. I decided to give the Digestzen a try. It's a blend of peppermint, caraway, coriander and a few others, that you add, just a drop, to your water. Sure enough it worked!
I like lemon in my water for it's healing properties and started adding one lemon drop to my water every morning. I could not tell the difference between the highest grade oregano oil that I get from the Herbalist vs doTERRA either.
The Great 'To Ingest or Not To Ingest' Debate
Now, here is where things get messy. Common sense is something that isn't used in many situations and fear overrides sensibilities. This is incredibly damaging for us as we learn to heal ourselves.
Why is it that people are so afraid of ingesting essential oils? Perhaps it comes down to self-responsibility, or lack thereof. Many people need to have people telling them what they can and cannot do. Me, I like to look into things for myself. I have to read several articles, studies and testimonials from others and finally I am a fan of being my own guinea pig.
My biggest point in this: If I don't wan't to ingest it, do I want to breathe it into my lungs (inside of me) or use it topically on my skin (that will drink it up)? I mean, really? Is it just me that sees this as being a bit odd?
This fear about ingesting oils is absolutely unfounded. Especially when we look at the myriad of chemicals the average North American consumes daily in processed foods and pharmaceuticals alone. The idea of being so fearful of a concentrated plant oil, after knowing it and what it does and doesn't do, to me, is silly, or perhaps the word I am looking for is 'ignorant'.
Like anything you must know what you're doing before you do it. Anyone who does anything with their health on blind faith, without looking into the treatment, whatever it is, is looking for trouble.
People afraid to consume beneficial essential oils should be questioning the purity of the other oils that they are using. Why is it that these companies cannot offer the same purity and yes, even labeling. I do understand the concerns, it's why it took me so long to get where I am today. Now that I'm here though, I'd never look back. Helping my body heal, one oil at a time!
Marlene has written up a fantastic blog about this very topic. I highly recommend that people take the time to read it with an open mind.
Of course I cannot convince anyone of anything. I will say that some of my most discerning friends have joined me in using doTERRA oils. I have taken great pleasure in seeing their reactions to some of what we had consider the 'top oils' versus doTERRA. Their eyes lit up and instantly they were hooked.
I would never offer something to anyone that I do not use myself. I make so many different lotions, potions, salves and sauces, teas and tinctures. doTERRA is the only oil I will use for myself and my family, both internally and topically.
I have a limited amount of oil samples to share with people who are interested.
If you are one of these interested people, fill out the form at the bottom of this article and let me know what your top 3 health concerns are. Include your email and I'll contact you with an essential oils class you can watch and we'll work out some free samples of oils for you.
