In April of 2011, I was introduced to Diatomaceous Earth (DE) through http://www.agrogreencanada.com/. Around the same time I had ordered some Moringa Leaf Powder that I had been researching, from http://www.ilovemoringa.com/. After a lot of stalling because that’s what I tend to do as I try new things, I discovered both additions to my diet, over time, changed my life.
HEALTH CANADA DOES NOT APPROVE THIS MESSAGE-
I’m healthier and more active now and although I’m not receiving any kick-backs for sharing this information, I do get the satisfaction of knowing that I am sharing something with others, that works for too many ailments to go without praise…not that my weight at the time was an ailment…was it? Hmmmmm…..symptoms of problems I had no idea my body was rife with. Parasites, blockages, candida, oh my!
I’m going to start off by letting you know that there is a list of things that were healed on top of the weight issue. I begin here because you can see it.
My first picture (below) is me in the summer of 2010. Marilyn Monroe would be proud…I was a size 16!!! 220lbs….CURVY!!! But not healthy. I was suffering from pain in my shoulders from double d’s, and my lower back as well as my knees. I was never comfortable truly and in 2009, even though I had changed my diet, was working out like mad (6 days a week at the gym) AND doing all the cleanses I could find to make my body healthy again. Nothing was working.
I began taking one tablespoon of diatomaceous earth in a glass of juice and noticed some differences in my energy level, bowel movements, perspiration, and it seemed to suppress my appetite.
Time went by and I really didn’t notice a weight loss difference…I was in sundresses all summer, how could I really notice? My bathing suit seemed to have stretched out in the wash though, that’s honestly what I had thought at the time.
Fast forwarding to September of that same year and I’m taking 2 tablespoons of the DE and 1 tsp. of Moringa Leaf Powder. We get a cool night, I put on a pair of jeans and they were far too big…at least 3 inches. I was shocked because the weight had been coming off so slowly that I didn’t notice, I did notice a little but not 3 inches!
By the following year I was a size 10 again and really happy about it….but it wasn’t JUST the weight as I mentioned at the beginning…it was many other things as well. I had worked at the Liquor Store for one season, that coupled with 10 years of bar-tending and being a writer and I was developing carpal tunnel…..I began to realize I no longer had this pain and numbness that used to stop me from writing or typing. I also had stopped wearing my glasses ( I had increased my intake of Moringa to 1/3 cup a day…crazy beta carotene). When I did put my glasses on (astigmatism) my sight was blurry, still is when I put them on…I try this out often to see if there’s been any changes and there still isn’t. I don’t know what happened there but I am not about to complain. Did I correct my vision? The human body can repair itself and my story is proof of that.
I was developing some arthritis in my knees and lower back….that was also gone. I would develop small patches of psoriasis on my arms in the winter and that was no longer occurring either.
Neat side note about watching my husband go through this process. He’s already thin and fit so he didn’t need to lose any weight, and he didn’t but he had a form of IBS that is now corrected. Every morning for as long as we’ve been together I have rolled into my husband’s sweet spot after he got up for his early shifts at the plant. You know, the warm spot that smells like your lover? ….mmmmm, my favorite spot next to in his arms. Anyhow, for 2 months I could not do this. Why? Let me explain….he worked at factories and his family’s company since he was 13 and the amount of metal toxins that he was in contact with was horrific! Truly, scared me. I knew what he did, what he had exposed himself to and knowing this along with his family history with cancer…I used to freak myself out, worried about the future and his health. He began taking the D.E. and for 2 months the sweating was horrid. I would think I was rolling into a sweet spot instead landing in a pool of sour, yucky sweat every morning, proceeding to then strip the bed, start laundry and then steam clean his side…every day….for two months. The sweat was so bad I wouldn’t kiss his forehead…it was gross. The sweat also left a yellow ring around his body outline on the bed. FUN! :P didn’t experience anything like that. I did sweat more for the first 2 months, definitely but nothing like what he went through.
Let me be very clear on something. I had made valid attempts to lose my weight for a couple of years with no luck so I honestly chalked it up to being almost mid-life. I began to believe I was destined to be frumpy a bit, or curvy and I actually learned to love myself. I didn’t like the pains that came with it but didn’t see the correlation of the mess of parasitic stew, candida and who knows what else, oh yes! Something else very interesting indeed!
I love my tattoos, say what you will but I love the art on my body, the meditation before, during and after, just the whole process. About 6 months before I had started the DE and Moringa, I had gotten a new OM tattoed on the inside of my left wrist. There are coloured dots splattered around the OM. A few weeks after the tattoo had began to heal, the purple-ish, reddish dots around the OM began to swell and itch. Not being new to tattoos, I applied my vitamin E, or Tattoo Goo, whichever I was using at the time, and waited patiently. The itch got worse. It was like having chicken pox all over my wrist. I tried everything to relieve it,began to research and found out some interesting information about red tattoo ink. Red ink may have mercurial sulfide and certain coloured inks often contain lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, titanium and other heavy metals. You have to be very careful in what your tattoo artist is using for an ink. There were a very few cases of melanoma being caused by poor inks laden with toxic metals. There are not many horror stories, but enough to make you very diligent about who is touching your skin with a needle. I had trusted my artist, who had ended up with some cheap ink in the shop he was in.
Long story short after using all the cures I could think of aside from the cannabis oil solution which at the time, I had honestly not even thought of, I started the DE and Moringa. I don’t remember when the itching stopped and when the swelling went down. All I know is that one day, we were talking about all the things that had changed in my body since I had started taking the pair, and I realized that my wrist no longer itched. 5 years later and I can say, the spots are fine and I have no worries.
The more I learned about DE and Moringa Leaf powder the more I fell in love with it. I’m still learning! It seems to cure people of what they need to be cured of specific to their body type. I also believe that they worked together to be the best damn super smoothie I have ever created in my life. The mixture of Moringa and DE is powerful!!!
Here I am in 2014, 130 pounds give or take, not losing anymore, full of energy, full of life and ready for anything. Did I mention that the DE contains silica is wonderful for skin and hair as well as the Moringa leaf powder. Perhaps a natural Fountain of Youth has been discovered here in this mix :)
Do yourself a favour, not me….research both items and try it!!!! The list of ailments that it is curing in people is outrageous…but true. DE is a parasitic cleanse and so much more. It’s a mineral supplement and the Moringa is a vitamin supplement…better than anything I have found and completely natural. I figure since I’m not making any money off of this, people will believe me :D
Oh and did I mention that DE kills Candida as well and that cancer can’t grow in that crap? Oh ya and yeast infections…haven’t had one since I started taking it….and I am rarely sick anymore unless I’m emotionally wrought and my body says enough. Put that in your pipes and smoke it!!! No I mean put that in your glass, add juice, stir and drink it! lol
Oh, and one last thing! We use the DE for everything! The pets, the garden, to clean with as an abrasive, mudmasks. The list seems to go on and on as we continue to use this fossilized white gold. Now I’ll let other’s explain everything I missed that really is the gravy on this topic.
Some detailed information about the two :
Information on Moringa below is from http://www.buzzle.com/articles/health-benefits-of-moringa.html
Health Benefits of Moringa
Moringa is widely found in tropical and sub-tropical belts. It is a medicinal plant used in Central and South America, Mexico, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, and Africa.
Moringa, also known as the Miracle Tree, is a multipurpose plant, as the leaves, pods, fruits, flowers, roots, and even the bark of the tree can be utilized. It is also called Drumstick Tree by the Britishers, while in Philippines it is known as malunggay. The scientific name of this tree is Moringa oleifera. The specialty of this tree is that it actually bears fruits in the warm season. Moringa is a powerhouse of minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants. Therefore, it is widely promoted in poverty-stricken areas to counter malnutrition, for the effects can be seen within a few days of including it in the diet. Its uses range from being a water purifier, to protecting the skin, and also to make perfume.
The Blessed Moringa
The leaves of this tree are said to be nutritional powerhouse. Research has proved that various parts of the moringa tree can be used to cure over 300 diseases. Let’s see a few of them here.
Moringa is rich in Vitamin A. It has four times more Vitamin A or beta-carotene than carrots. Hence, it is a weapon against blindness.
It is also a rich source of Vitamin C. It contains Vitamin C seven times more than oranges.
Normally milk is said to be a rich source of calcium but the amount of calcium present in moringa leaves is way higher than in milk. To be more precise, moringa is said to have four times more calcium than milk.
The moringa leaves are said to contain twice the protein present in milk.
Bananas are a rich source of potassium, but moringa leaves contain seven times more potassium than bananas.
Along with potassium, zinc is also found in large quantities in moringa.
If moringa leaves were to be eaten by one and all, the world will be free of anemia as it contains thrice more iron than spinach.
With all the junk food eaten these days, many people face problems of high cholesterol. Moringa helps in balancing the cholesterol levels in the body.
Essential amino acids are also found in moringa.
Moringa is also said to balance sugar levels, hence it is helpful in fighting against diabetes.
The body’s natural defense mechanism increases with the consumption of moringa in the daily diet pattern. Since it is an immunity-stimulant, it is prescribed for AIDS afflicted patients. Less immunity is rampant in many provinces in Africa, especially people who do not have access to nutritious food and medicines.
Moringa leaves can be consumed to stimulate metabolism.
It is also said to have digestive powers.
It is a nutrition booster and is known to promote a feeling of well-being in people.
If you are looking for non-sugar based energy, then moringa leaves is the answer. Thus, it will also help in the weight loss process.
The cell structure of the body is stimulated by the moringa leaves.
It is especially useful for lactating mothers. The consumption of moringa has shown dramatic increase in the quantity of breast milk.
It is also famous for its anti-bacterial properties.
The paste of the moringa leaves is said to beautify the skin and is hence applied by women regularly.
It protects the liver and kidneys.
It can also be used as a water purifier.
Moringa helps in faster recovery of the muscles and tissues after a strenuous workout.
Anxiety and depression can also be countered with the use of moringa.
People suffering from insomnia find the use of moringa beneficial for it helps in regulating sleep cycles.
It is known to nourish the eyes, therefore, people suffering from poor eyesight should include moringa in their diet.
Other Benefits of Moringa
Along with the benefits of moringa mentioned above, there are other benefits to it as well. They are enumerated below.
It can be used as a source of bio-fuel.
Cooking oil can also be produced from moringa tree. The benefits of Moringa oil, can be compared to sunflower oil and olive oil.
It is used in the manufacture of cosmetics and personal care products. Perfumes and aromatherapy oils are also manufactured from moringa seeds. The flowers of the moringa plant can be used in making herbal tea, for they add a refreshing aroma to the tea.
Moringa contains more than 90 nutrients and 46 types of antioxidants. With all the health benefits, moringa has to offer, it can easily be termed as the most nutritious plant on the face of the earth. At the same time it can be consumed by small children and adults alike. Therefore, many people have started using it in salads, porridge, pastas, breads, etc., to reap the everlasting health benefits of the extraordinary ‘Moringa’.
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous Earth can be found in most animal feed stores, pet stores and hydroponic garden centres.
Information below for Diatomaceous Earth from www.wolfcreek.ranch.net
Food grade diatomaceous earth has many uses and excellent health benefits for humans, plants, and animals. The diatomaceous earth information below will tell you:
Some of the differences in grades of diatomaceous earth.
What food grade diatomaceous earth is and where it comes from.
Why it is important to use ONLY food grade diatomaceous earth.
Information on the many health benefits of food grade diatomaceous earth for people, pets, livestock, and plants.
How to use food grade diatomaceous earth to increase the health of your people, pets, livestock, and plants.
How to use food grade diatomaceous earth for naturally effective parasite control.
Diatomaceous earth (DE) is the remains of microscopic one-celled plants (phytoplankton) called diatoms that lived in the oceans and lakes that once covered the western part of the US and other parts of the world. These deposits are mined from underwater beds or from ancient dried lake bottoms thousands of years old. This means, diatomaceous earth has an unlimited shelf life provided you keep it dry.
Diatomaceous earth is mined, milled, and processed into a myriad of types for a large variety of uses. Filtering and filler are two main uses but diatomaceous earth also ends up in paints, cosmetics, drugs, chemical insecticides, etc. Because the milling produces different sized and shaped particles, it is important not to use the filtering type for agricultural purposes.
Pool filter grade diatomaceous earth has been heat and chemically treated and will poison an animal or human who ingests it, so it is always of utmost importance to only obtain food grade diatomaceous earth to use in and around your household.
Diatoms (DE) are the grass of the oceans and lakes. Just as grass is the staple food of earth animals. Diatoms (algae) are the food of the ocean or fresh water grazers. Magnified 7000x, diatomaceous earth looks like spiney honeycombs.
Food grade diatomaceous earth is EPA approved to be mixed with grains to control mealworms and other pests and has been exempted from tolerance requirements as an inert, inactive ingredient in chemical pesticides. Diatomaceous earth is EPA approved against indoor and outdoor crawling insects. Diatomaceous earth is USDA approved as an anti-caking agent for animal feed. Diatomaceous earth is FDA approved for internal and external use and has a rating of Food Chemical Codex Grade.
Our diatomaceous earth is organic OMRI listed Codex Food Chemical Grade. It is a non-treated, non-calcined fresh water Diatomaceous Earth. It is mined, crushed, sifted, bagged and pure white in color. It contains less than .5% silicon. There are food grade diatomaceous earth products that are yellow or tan in color which indicates a higher iron content. Those which are gray in color contain more clay.
INTERNAL PARASITE CONTROL:
Food grade diatomaceous earth makes a very effective natural insecticide. The insecticidal quality of diatomaceous earth is due to the razor sharp edges of the diatom remains. When diatomaceous earth comes in contact with the insects, the sharp edges lacerate the bugs waxy exoskeleton and then the powdery diatomaceous earth absorbs the body fluids causing death from dehydration.
Food grade diatomaceous earth has been used for at least two decades as a natural wormer for livestock. Some believe diatomaceous earth scratches and dehydrates parasites. Some scientists believe that diatomaceous earth is a de-ionizer or de-energizer of worms or parasites. Regardless, people report definite control. To be most effective, food grade diatomaceous earth must be fed long enough to catch all newly hatching eggs or cycling of the worms through the lungs and back to the stomach. A minimum of 60 days is suggested by many, 90 days is advised for lungworms.
Food grade diatomaceous earth works in a purely physical/mechanical manner, not “chemical” and thus has no chemical toxicity. Best yet, parasites don’t build up a tolerance/immunity to its chemical reaction, so rotation of wormers is unnecessary.
People often ask why our DE is rated Food Chemical Codex Grade. If it was only labeled as “food” grade, people would think it is only useful as a food supplement and since DE “acts” like a chemical by dehydrating insects, it was labeled “Chemical” grade since it acts like a chemical, but it is NOT a true chemical like a pesticide or insecticide. It is perfectly safe for oral consumption.
*CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS OF FEEDING CODEX FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH TO DOGS*
O.C. Collins, DVM, Midland Animal Clinic And Hospital, Midland, TX: “In clinical observations of feeding dogs over 35 lbs. 1 tbsp./day and under 35 lbs. 1 tsp./day of DE, within seven days all ova disappeared from stools. DE controlled Ascardis (Toxacara canids), Hookworms (Anclyostoma caninum), and Whipworms (Trichuris vulipis).”
*RESULTS ON FEEDING CODEX FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH TO WALKING HORSE*
L. Thomas, Trainer, L. Frank Roper Stables, Winter Garden, FL: “With horses fed approximately 5 oz. of DE mixed in the feed twice daily, the following results were observed: Stopped scours even on horses that had not responded to any other medications. Noticeable fly reduction. Horses showed an increase in appetites. Weight gain due to better feed conversion. Reduction in manure odor. Elimination of any internal parasites. Healthier appearance.
Daily recommended food grade diatomaceous earth feeding rates:
Kittens – 1/2 teaspoon
Cats – 1 teaspoon
Puppies – 1/2 to 1 tsp.
Dogs under 35 lbs. – 1 teaspoon
Dogs over 35 lbs. – 1 tablespoon
Dogs over 100 lbs. – 2 tablespoons
Cattle, Dairy Cows, & Hogs – 2% of dry feed ration
Chickens – 5% in feed
Goats, Sheep, Alpacas, & Llamas – 2% in grain
Horses – 1/2 to 1 cup in daily ration
Zoo animals – 2% in daily feed
*Humans – 1 heaping tablespoon daily
Internal feeding of food grade diatomaceous earth helps eliminate most internal worms, including roundworms, pin worms, tapeworms, etc. It’s also excellent when fed daily to keep down fly loads, since food grade diatomaceous earth is eliminated from the body, exactly the way it went in, it helps reduce the manure odor and kills flies that come in contact with it.
Mix in animal feed or grain and/or feed free choice. Our goats, fowl, and dogs eat it free choice.
*Some recommend to dose humans by mixing food grade diatomaceous earth in a glass of water before bed or first thing in the morning, well before breakfast, to allow diatomaceous earth time to move through and absorb toxins from ones digestive tract without interfering or absorbing nutrients from foods or liquids. Some report great results consuming 1 tsp. in a glass of water prior to each meal, 3x/day.
If fecal counts are not zero for worms and ova after feeding DE for 30 days, increase the daily dose. Feeding too small a dose of DE will not give desired results. Increasing the dose, even if greater than the above recommendations, will not harm anyone. Some horses do fine on 1/2 cup of DE daily, others need a full cup. This reminds us, that all beings are different. So again, if the worm and ova counts are not zero, increase your daily dose.
For information on how we personally use food grade diatomaceous earth when dealing with worm infestations, Click Here. Please NOTE, when you know you are dealing with a worm infestation or tapeworms in particular, it is the opinion of Wolf Creek Ranch that it is best to at least double the recommended dosage as suggested above by the manufacturer. Remember, the diatomaceous earth MUST come in contact with the worms in order to “dehydrate” them and since worms can kill us or our pets and at the very least, cause disease, more is better to prevent having to deal with disease or death.
IS FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH SAFE TO USE DURING PREGNANCY?
Definitely! When food grade diatomaceous earth is fed in adequate daily amounts, it eliminates all intestinal worms and parasites. This helps the human or animal better absorb the nutrients from the food they eat, which in turn benefits the being, but also greatly benefits the unborn infant or animals by passing on these nutrients to them helping to make them stronger and healthier as well.
For human use, it is best to start at a small dose – 1/2 teaspoon for the first few days while making sure to drink plenty of clean fresh pure water (not city tap water) and slowly increasing the dose as your body tells you it is okay to do so and to make sure you don’t have a heavy detox.
If you are building a new home, barn, or other structure that is the perfect time to use DE and apply it on the inside of the walls, before installing insulation, in the attic, etc. to prevent pesky bugs now and in the future. DE helps provide a nice safe home environment that doesn’t have fleas, mites, ticks, flies, silverfish, cockroaches, bedbugs, centipedes, earwigs, ants – carpenter ants, red ants, black ants, and all other insects and bugs.
Food grade DE can be applied along baseboards, under appliances, inside cabinets and drawers, inside wall outlets, lightly in carpeting, and anywhere you are having an insect problem. Test lightly in an area of your home that you want to apply it to make sure you and your family don’t have a reaction to it, then apply or reapply as needed. Bugs lay larvae or eggs, so DE must be left out long enough for the hatchlings to come in contact with it. You can vacuum the treated areas once/week (make sure some DE is in the vacuum bag to dehydrate any live insects you vacuum up), then reapply if needed. Since most insects have a laying cycle of 7 to 21 days, we recommend treating inside the home for at least 30 days for best effectiveness.
If the insect problem is coming from outside the home and the insects are now residing in your home, treat both outside the home and inside at the same time for maximum effectiveness.
EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS FOR DOGS & CATS:
Lightly rub food grade diatomaceous earth into pets coat, fur, and bedding to dehydrate fleas, lice, mites, and ticks. Dust them lightly, but thoroughly, as in order to kill the parasites, they must come in contact with the DE. Note, external application can take up to 72 hours to dehydrate external parasites.
For maximum flea, tick, mite, and lice protection give Flea Free in their daily water or food, while treating the home, yard, garden, and pet externally with food grade DE.
Lightly sprinkle in household carpet. Leave for 2-3+ days, then vacuum. Please do not get heavy handed with the DE in your carpet, as I have heard from some people advising it causes problems with their vacuum.
Many people advise using ONLY food grade diatomaceous earth eliminates a flea problem, but we cannot say that it does this for everyone. If you are dealing with a flea infestation, we usually recommend food grade DE in the household carpet, pet bedding, on the pets, and outside in the dry areas where fleas congregate. But in the moist areas, such as lawns, gardens, etc., we have always recommended using beneficial/parasitic nematodes. These microscopic nematodes parasitize flea larvae. DE, as far as we know, only kills the adult fleas that come in contact with it. So DE possibly does not kill flea larvae. To keep fleas and ticks from wanting to jump on your pets, it is best to give them Flea Free in their daily water or food, while treating the home, yard, garden, and pet externally with food grade DE.
It is said that only 5 to 15% of a flea infestation are the adult fleas that you see. The remaining 85 to 95% of your infestation are the larvae waiting to hatch!! As such, and although we have many customers who advise using only food grade diatomaceous earth worked to eliminate their flea problem, we still recommend using the food grade DE in conjunction with beneficial nematodes in outdoor moist areas.
EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS FOR LIVESTOCK, BARNS, COOPS, KENNELS, & LITTER BOXES:
We use DE throughout the barn, fowl coops, and pastures. When mucking the barn and coops, I lightly, but thoroughly sprinkle diatomaceous earth absolutely everywhere! It keeps the kidding barn cleansed and dry. In between barn mucking, I sprinkle diatomaceous earth on wet spots to help dry them out and keep flies from laying eggs. It helps keep the crickets, ants, silverfish, roaches, earwigs, flies, mites, and all other disgusting insects from bothering us and our wonderful animals.
Food grade diatomaceous earth is excellent in the fowl coops – on the ground, in nesting/dusting boxes to prevent lice and mites. Sprinkle directly on fowl feathers to eliminate mites and lice. One thorough application of diatomaceous earth has their feathers growing back quickly.
Food grade diatomaceous earth applied to manure piles keeps fly loads down/eliminated.
Dairy cow owners put food grade diatomaceous earth in burlap bags, so cows can rub against it and sprinkle themselves with DE, which helps to eliminate flies, that land on them, as well as lice, mites, and ticks.
Apply to moist kennel areas to reduce odors, dry the area, and prevent pest breeding.
Deodorizing and absorption are natural functions of diatomaceous earth, so add to kitty litter to absorb odors and keep the litter box drier.
A small amount of food grade DE applied to livestock water keeps algae from growing on hot summer days. The amount of DE you need to apply depends on the size and color of the water container and climate temperature. Start by experimenting with a small amount of DE in the water container and increase as/if needed.
Food grade diatomaceous earth is great for compost piles, to prevent breeding pests and control odors. It will not harm earthworms, provided you just apply to the top of the compost or worm farm soil. The earthworms will slowly work the DE into the soil making them healthier, as well as the soil. Of course, if you put the earthworms in a bucket of DE, it will dehydrate them.
We use food grade diatomaceous earth on the barn floors at kidding time, instead of using lime which can be toxic. This helps prevent flies, mites, fleas, lice, earwigs, termites, and other pests from breeding and keeps the newborn kids healthy, happy, strong, and disease free.
YARD, GARDEN, & LANDSCAPE APPLICATIONS:
DE’s minerals are great for the yard and gardens.
Apply DE to ant hills. Small ants, regardless of color, may require a few applications to completely eliminate them, as they burrow new hills elsewhere, after we cover their initial hill with DE, but if we keep at it, eventually they disappear. Big ants are eliminated within two applications of a reasonable amount of DE applied to their ant hill. Ants in trash cans can be controlled by either painting DE around the bottom of the trash can or sprinkling it dry around it. They’ll go elsewhere, as they do not like walking over DE. Of course, you will need to find their home to completely eliminate them, but it will keep them away from areas you put DE. Sprinkled around the house foundation keeps new crawling insects from coming inside.
Fire ants will need regular application of DE to eliminate them, but if you continue regular applications, it will eliminate the fire ants.
We mix food grade diatomaceous earth with water to paint our fruit tree trunks with it, like a white wash. The DE keeps ants OFF our fruit trees. 1 cup applied to ½ gallon of water works well. Be sure to stir frequently as the DE settles to the bottom. Good as a white wash for wood fencing too.
1 to 2 cups per gallon of water can be used to apply diatomaceous earth in a backpack or hose end sprayer for problem infestations of mites, aphids, fungus problems, etc. Food grade diatomaceous earth will turn whatever you paint or spray with it white – so it may look like a “white” winter at your place.
Food grade diatomaceous earth will not destroy earthworms, if applied to the top of the soil in worm farms and the worms are allowed to work it into the soil on their own. It is actually beneficial to the worms and compost just make sure to allow the worms to do the work and not bury them in the DE.
OUTDOOR BUGS AFFECTED BY DIATOMACEOUS EARTH:
Ants, fire ants, caterpillars, cut worms, army worms, fleas, ticks, cockroaches, snails, spiders, termites, scorpions, silverfish, lice, mites, flies, centipedes, earwigs, slugs, aphids, Japanese beetles (grub stage), bed bugs, fruit flies, corn earworm, cucumber beetles, corn borer, sting bugs, squash vine borers, thrips, loopers, etc., etc.
Pests that lay eggs may require a second application to catch the hatching eggs.
Natural food grade diatomaceous earth contains 15 trace minerals: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, copper, zinc iron, phosphorous, selenium, etc. People note shinier coats, better overall health, better production, etc. in their animals who are fed food grade diatomaceous earth regularly.
Used daily, DE helps eliminate our fly population here used in conjunction with beneficial/parasitic nematodes in wet or moist garden areas. Sprinkle DE on livestock when flies are present. Dust barns, coops, after mucking and throw on top of manure/compost piles. We feed it daily to all dogs, cats, fowl, and livestock, so it comes out in the manure of each animal as well and prevents flies from growing in the manures.
Farmers hang burlap bags full of diatomaceous earth for the cattle to rub against and keep themselves dusted, which eliminates flies and other pests that land on them.
Diatomaceous earth can be put in a backpack sprayer mixed with water to spray your barn or coop buildings. Reapply DE when rain or water washes or wind blows it away.
GRAIN STORAGE & PROTECTION:
Codex food grade diatomaceous earth is a healthy non-toxic alternative to chemical contamination of stored grain. When the grain is to be used, food grade diatomaceous earth can be easily removed, but need not be. Since it is “food grade”, makes no difference in taste or cooking quality, and adds 15 trace minerals. Suggested grain storage use: 1 cup of DE will protect 50 #’s of grain — 5 cups of food grade diatomaceous earth will protect 300 #’s of grain — 7 lbs. of DE will protect 1500 #’s of grain or seeds. One source advises only 1 to 2 #’s of DE per ton of grain.
A study done by ACRES, USA, Inc. advised that after 12 months of storage, the food grade diatomaceous earth treated material had 15 insects, compared to 4884 for malathion and 16,994 for untreated grain.
MORE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH BENEFITS:
Food grade diatomaceous earth has been reported in scientific literature to absorb methyl mercury, e-coli, endotoxins, viruses (including polio virus), organophosphate pesticide residues, drug resides, and protein, perhaps even the proteinaceous toxins produced by some intestinal infections. Food grade diatomaceous earth detoxes.
There are some features about food grade diatomaceous earth that correspond with its ability as both a digestive aid and a colon cleanser. The honeycomb skeletal form of diatomaceous earth is found, under microscopic evaluation to reveal a tendency to become filled and clogged with hard debris such as intestinal scale. Food grade diatomaceous earth has not been found to cause any insult to the mucosa or barrier wall.
Diatomaceous earth has a negative charge and bacteria has a positive charge, wherein it is believed by some that food grade diatomaceous earth sweeps bacteria out of the body by trapping it in its honeycomb shaped skeletal form.
There is no withdrawal period when given to milking or feed animals. No toxins. Decreased mortality, increased milk production, decreased mastitis, better feed conversion.
WHY IS YOUR DE LABELED FOOD CHEMICAL CODEX GRADE?
The ONLY kind of DE we sell is labeled “Food Chemical Codex Grade”. This is “food” grade DE, though the “Chemical” sounds scary, it was labeled that way so that people would realize it isn’t just to feed to humans or animals, but so people realize it can be used externally for fleas, flies, ticks, mites, bed bugs, and other insect pests in organic farming situations, etc., as it “acts” like a chemical by dehydrating insects, but it is NOT a chemical in the traditional sense of being a pesticide type thing.
DE manufacturers who work in diatomaceous earth mines 5 days/week advise inhaling it is not a problem (tho of course, don’t be snuffing it) and we have not had problems when inhaling DE in small amounts. IF you have asthma or some other lung ailment, either wear a mask or be very careful when using food grade diatomaceous earth.
Do NOT get diatomaceous earth in the eyes. DE is drying to the eyes, so do NOT put it out when you or your pets are down wind of it. DE is drying to your skin, hands, and feet, just as it can be to your pets.
Do NOT use heavily in carpet. Some advise too much DE causes vacuum problems.
NEVER use pool filter grade or any diatomaceous earth other than those labeled “Food Grade” for yourself or your animals. It can poison or kill them.
Some people experience a healing crisis (detox reaction) when beginning DE consumption. If this occurs, reduce the dose, till your body is cleansed, and then increase to the RDA.
Remember, DE will kill beneficial insects as well, so don’t put it on your flowers where the honey bees go and use wisely.
